Xavier defeats New Haven 31-17 in opener

**Musketeers Launch New Gridiron Era with Decisive Victory at Inaugural Musketeer Field Opener**

**CINCINNATI, Ohio – September 3, 2023** – A new chapter in Xavier University athletics unfurled with electric anticipation this past Saturday, September 2nd, as the Musketeers debuted their Division I football program and christened the state-of-the-art Musketeer Field with a commanding 31-17 victory over the New Haven Chargers. An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 15,000 fans, the largest attendance for any event in Xavier’s history on campus, filled the stands, buzzing with excitement for the much-anticipated season opener.

The atmosphere was palpable as Xavier made its triumphant return to the gridiron after a decades-long hiatus, marking a significant investment and commitment to Division I football. However, the initial moments tested the home team’s composure. New Haven quickly silenced the roaring crowd, capitalizing on an early drive to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Chargers running back Mikey O’Connell punched in a short touchdown run, giving the visitors an unexpected advantage.

But the Musketeers, under the leadership of veteran Head Coach Mark Harrison, soon found their footing. By halftime, Xavier had not only erased the deficit but surged ahead, heading into the locker room with a 14-10 lead. Junior quarterback Marcus Thorne orchestrated a pivotal second-quarter drive, capped by a precise 35-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Devin Carter, igniting the home crowd and signaling a shift in momentum.

“The initial jitters were definitely there, which is to be expected when you’re launching a program of this magnitude in front of such an incredible crowd,” said Coach Harrison after the game. “But I was immensely proud of how our guys settled in. They showed resilience, focus, and belief in each other to turn that early setback around.”

The second half saw the Musketeers truly hit their stride, dominating on both sides of the ball. Running back Jamal Green emerged as a powerhouse, consistently churning out yards and wearing down the Chargers’ defense. By the final whistle, Green had amassed an impressive 120 rushing yards and a crucial touchdown, showcasing the ground game’s potential. Thorne continued his efficient play, adding another touchdown pass in the third quarter, extending Xavier’s lead.

Despite a late touchdown pass from Chargers quarterback Alex Rodriguez, New Haven couldn’t close the gap. Xavier’s defense, after the initial score, tightened significantly, forcing key stops and limiting New Haven’s offensive opportunities in crucial moments. The final score, 31-17, reflected Xavier’s assertive performance in the latter half.

“It was surreal stepping out onto that field with all those fans, a truly special moment,” said Thorne, who finished the night with two touchdown passes and 215 yards through the air. “We knew New Haven would come out strong, but we trusted our game plan and executed when it mattered.” Green added, “My offensive line was creating massive holes all night. This win is for everyone who worked so hard to bring football back to Xavier.”

The inaugural game at Musketeer Field, a stunning new venue that stands as a testament to Xavier’s ambitious athletic expansion, was deemed a resounding success by university officials and fans alike. “Tonight wasn’t just about a football game; it was about laying the foundation for a new era of Xavier athletics,” remarked Athletic Director Mike O’Hearn. “The energy, the turnout, and the team’s performance exceeded all expectations.”
