UT Martin Defeats EIU 27-20 in Overtime

Skyhawks Claim Thrilling Overtime Victory Over Eastern Illinois, 27-20

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The UT Martin Skyhawks secured a dramatic 27-20 overtime victory against the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Saturday, October 7th, at O’Brien Field, marking a crucial start to their Ohio Valley Conference schedule.

The intensely contested matchup saw both teams battle to a 20-20 stalemate through regulation, setting the stage for an extra period. UT Martin wasted no time in overtime, with quarterback Jase Bauer delivering a decisive 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bryce Bailey on the Skyhawks’ very first possession of the extra frame, putting them ahead 27-20.

Eastern Illinois then had its chance to respond, but the Skyhawk defense held firm. On a critical fourth-down play, defensive back Keyshawn Johnson came up with the game-sealing stop, preventing the Panthers from extending the game and securing the hard-fought road victory for UT Martin.

Throughout regulation, the contest was a back-and-forth affair, with both offenses exchanging scores and defenses making timely stands. The Panthers, playing on their home turf, battled fiercely, keeping the score tight and ensuring the game remained in doubt until the final whistle.

With the victory, UT Martin improved its overall record to 4-2 and, more importantly, moved to 1-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, positioning themselves well early in the league standings. Eastern Illinois, meanwhile, dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the OVC, facing an uphill battle in the conference race.

Looking ahead, UT Martin will return home to Hardy Graham Stadium on Saturday, October 14th, to host another OVC rival. Eastern Illinois will hit the road for an away conference matchup next weekend.
