Spartans defeat Hawaii 45-38

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State delivered a thrilling offensive performance to secure a 45-38 victory over Hawaii on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at CEFCU Stadium, keeping their postseason hopes alive.

The Spartans’ offense exploded for over 600 total yards, spearheaded by a standout performance from quarterback Walker Eget. Filling in for the injured Chevan Cordeiro, Eget put on a clinic, throwing for a career-high 458 yards and three touchdowns, completing 24 of 36 passes. His deep connection with wide receiver Justin Lockhart was a highlight, including a crucial 64-yard bomb, as Lockhart finished the night with 161 yards on six receptions. Wide receiver Danny Scudero also proved a favorite target, hauling in two of Eget’s touchdown passes and accumulating 109 yards on five catches.

The ground game was equally potent, with running back Steve Chavez-Soto bulldozing his way to three rushing touchdowns and 117 yards on 18 carries, ensuring a balanced and formidable attack.

Hawaii, however, refused to back down, showcasing their own offensive firepower. Rainbow Warriors quarterback Brayden Schager threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns, connecting twice with Steven McBride, who ended with 115 yards on nine receptions. Pofele Ashlock also contributed significantly with 105 yards on eight catches and a touchdown. The Rainbow Warriors even tied the game at 21-21 in the second quarter after a defensive scoop-and-score, with Peter Manuma returning a fumble 38 yards to the end zone.

Despite Hawaii’s resilience, San Jose State maintained their composure. The Spartans’ defense, while yielding significant yardage, came up with a crucial late-game stop in the fourth quarter to effectively seal the victory and prevent another potential Hawaii comeback.

This hard-fought win improves San Jose State’s record to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play, positioning them to make a push for bowl eligibility with three games remaining on their schedule. Hawaii, conversely, falls to 2-7 overall and remains winless in conference play at 0-4.

San Jose State will look to continue their momentum next Saturday, November 4, when they host regional rival Fresno State. Hawaii will also be at home, welcoming San Diego State to Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
