Sac State’s 4-TD run game beats Eastern Washington 35-13

SACRAMENTO, CA – The Sacramento State Hornets asserted their dominance in the Big Sky Conference on Saturday, October 28th, dismantling Eastern Washington University with a resounding 35-13 victory at Hornet Stadium. A relentless ground game proved to be the cornerstone of the Hornets’ success, as the team amassed impressive rushing statistics to control the game.

Running back Rodney Hammond Jr. led the offensive charge for the Hornets, delivering a career-high performance with 208 yards on 22 carries, finding the end zone twice. Not to be outdone, fellow running back Jaquail Smith also made a significant impact, contributing two touchdowns of his own, including electrifying runs of 45 and 29 yards that showcased his speed and agility. The Hornets’ offensive line consistently opened substantial lanes, allowing the duo to frequently break into the secondary.

The crucial conference victory improved Sacramento State’s impressive season record to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in Big Sky play, solidifying their contention for a conference title. Eastern Washington, struggling to find consistency this season, fell to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play following the loss. The game marked a critical matchup for both teams as they navigate the competitive Big Sky schedule.

While the run game stole the headlines, the Hornets’ defense was equally instrumental in the win, holding the Eagles to just 13 points and limiting their offensive opportunities. Sac State’s defensive unit consistently pressured Eastern Washington’s quarterback, recording two sacks and forcing a critical interception in the second half that stifled an Eagles’ scoring threat. The Hornets maintained control of the clock throughout the contest, dominating time of possession and minimizing Eastern Washington’s offensive possessions.

Head Coach Andy Thompson praised his team’s complete effort after the game. “Our offensive line set the tone, and Rodney and Jaquail ran with incredible vision and power,” Thompson stated. “Defensively, we bent but didn’t break and made crucial stops when it mattered most. This was a complete team effort against a tough conference opponent, and it speaks volumes about our preparation and execution.”

Sacramento State will look to carry this momentum into their next Big Sky matchup, hosting Cal Poly at Hornet Stadium on Saturday, November 4th, as they continue their pursuit of a conference championship. Eastern Washington will aim to rebound as they return home to Cheney, Washington, to face Montana State on the same day.
