Saban: Ole Miss Rivals LSU, Florida Jobs

OXFORD, Miss. – Legendary former Alabama coach Nick Saban recently challenged conventional wisdom regarding high-profile college football jobs, specifically questioning the long-held belief that programs like LSU or Florida are inherently superior to the head coaching position at Ole Miss, currently held by Lane Kiffin. Saban’s comments, made during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on December 1, 2023, sparked a fresh debate about program prestige in the evolving landscape of college athletics.

During his discussion, Saban directly addressed the constant speculation surrounding Kiffin’s future, whose name frequently surfaces for various coaching vacancies across the Southeastern Conference and beyond. “Is Ole Miss that much worse than LSU or Florida?” Saban queried aloud. “I don’t think so.”

Saban’s perspective underscores a shift in how coaching opportunities are viewed, particularly with the advent of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal. His point suggests that while programs like LSU and Florida boast richer historical traditions, larger fan bases, and often greater financial resources, the modern college football environment might be leveling the playing field for programs like Ole Miss that demonstrate a strong commitment to success and provide their coaches with necessary support.

Kiffin, who arrived in Oxford in December 2019, has significantly elevated the Ole Miss program. Under his leadership, the Rebels have achieved unprecedented success, including a 10-3 record in 2021 culminating in a Sugar Bowl appearance, and an impressive 11-2 finish in 2023, capped by a victory in the Peach Bowl. That 11-win season marked a program record, further solidifying Kiffin’s standing and making Ole Miss a consistent presence in the top 25 national rankings. His high-octane offensive schemes and adept use of the transfer portal have made Ole Miss a desirable destination for top talent.

The former Alabama coach, who retired in January 2024 as one of college football’s most successful figures, has an unparalleled understanding of the SEC’s competitive landscape. His endorsement carries significant weight, suggesting that Kiffin’s consistent success at Ole Miss makes the job increasingly attractive, potentially on par with traditional powerhouses that might currently be experiencing their own set of challenges or higher levels of external pressure.

For years, jobs at LSU and Florida have been considered among the sport’s most coveted. LSU boasts three national championships since 2003 and a dedicated recruiting base in Louisiana. Florida, similarly, has a storied history with multiple national titles and access to the talent-rich state of Florida. However, both programs have also seen significant coaching turnover in recent decades, indicating the immense pressure and expectations that accompany those roles.

Saban’s comments serve as a reminder that a program’s current trajectory, administrative support, and adaptability to new collegiate athletics rules might now be as crucial as historical prestige when evaluating a coaching position. For Lane Kiffin, the “underrated” Ole Miss job appears to offer a strong foundation for continued success, potentially diminishing the allure of jumping to a seemingly “bigger” program.
