NFL Stars Vick, Jackson Coach HBCUs, Reunite

Philadelphia, PA – Former Philadelphia Eagles stars DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick, both embarking on new chapters as coaches at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), shared a notable reunion this past Saturday, May 11th, at Lincoln Financial Field. The celebrated athletes participated in a celebrity flag football game, an event organized to benefit the Eagles Autism Foundation, bringing them back to the very stadium where they once created NFL magic.

The reunion highlights significant career pivots for both players. Michael Vick, 43, has been at the helm of Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) as head coach since July 2023, steering the Dragons’ football program with his extensive professional experience.

Meanwhile, DeSean Jackson, 37, who was announced last week as joining Tennessee State University, is reportedly taking on a role within the Tigers’ coaching staff. He joins a program led by former NFL running back Eddie George, who has served as TSU’s head coach since 2021. Jackson’s move marks his official entry into collegiate coaching, following a decorated NFL career.

The paths of Jackson and Vick famously intertwined during their tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick, a dynamic quarterback, played for the team from 2009 to 2013. Jackson, a prolific wide receiver, was a key offensive weapon for the Eagles from 2008 to 2013, returning for a second stint in 2019-2020. Their electrifying on-field chemistry was a defining feature of Eagles offenses during their shared time, making their return to the Linc for a charitable cause a poignant moment for fans.

Their pivot to HBCU coaching roles places them squarely within a growing trend of former NFL players and coaches dedicating their expertise to these vital institutions. This movement has gained considerable momentum in recent years, drawing national attention to HBCU football. Beyond George at TSU and Vick at VUL, other prominent figures include Hue Jackson, who coaches at Grambling State University. This trend underscores the increasing recognition of HBCUs as essential platforms for developing athletic talent and providing mentorship opportunities.

These coaching endeavors not only offer a new professional chapter for the former NFL stars but also inject invaluable experience, high-profile visibility, and mentorship into HBCU football programs, aiming to inspire and cultivate the next generation of players and coaches.
