NDSU 38-30 YSU: Home Streak Reaches 13

FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State demonstrated resilience and explosive playmaking Saturday, overcoming an early injury to its starting quarterback and leaning on a series of decisive moments to defeat Youngstown State 38-30 at a packed Fargodome. The hard-fought victory extended the Bison’s impressive home winning streak to 13 consecutive games, solidifying their reputation as one of the toughest teams to beat on their own turf.

The game took a challenging turn early for the Bison when starting quarterback Cam Miller exited after just three series due to an injury. Redshirt freshman Cole Payton stepped into the demanding role and delivered a pivotal performance. Payton completed 13 of 20 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, showcasing composure under pressure. His most electrifying moment came in the fourth quarter when he broke free for a 77-yard touchdown run, stretching NDSU’s lead to 38-24 at the time and giving the Bison crucial breathing room.

North Dakota State’s ground attack was formidable, spearheaded by Barika Kpeenu. Kpeenu gashed the Penguins’ defense for three rushing touchdowns, accumulating 106 yards on 22 carries. His efforts were instrumental in maintaining offensive rhythm and controlling the clock for the Bison.

However, the game’s turning point arrived early in the second half. After Youngstown State scored to open the third quarter and tie the game at 17-17, Bison return specialist Jaylin Williams immediately countered with a breathtaking 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Williams’ electrifying sprint sent the Fargodome crowd into a frenzy, instantly putting NDSU back on top 24-17 and seizing momentum. Kicker Griffin Crosa also contributed points with field goals from 29 and 27 yards out.

Youngstown State, however, refused to back down. Quarterback Mitch Davidson led the Penguins with a strong showing, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns. His primary target, wide receiver Max Revere, was a constant threat, hauling in eight passes for 120 yards and two scores. Brandon Hagan also added a touchdown reception for the Penguins, keeping the game competitive throughout.

Ultimately, NDSU’s disciplined play proved to be the difference-maker. The Bison forced two crucial turnovers – an interception and a fumble recovery – while committing zero turnovers themselves, a statistic that frequently decides tight contests.

With this significant win, North Dakota State improved its overall record to 4-2 and moved to 2-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Youngstown State also stands at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, highlighting the intense competition within the MVFC.

Looking ahead, North Dakota State will travel to take on the Western Illinois Leathernecks next Saturday, October 14, in Macomb, Illinois. Youngstown State will return home to host the Northern Iowa Panthers the same day at Stambaugh Stadium.
