NCCU routs Howard 35-14 behind Harris & Spikes

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University Eagles, defending MEAC and Celebration Bowl champions, delivered a dominant performance in their conference opener, defeating Howard University 35-14 this past Saturday, September 23, at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. The convincing victory improved the Eagles’ overall record to 3-1 and launched them to a perfect 1-0 start in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

The undisputed star of the contest was senior wide receiver Chauncey Spikes, who shattered his career high with an astounding 208 receiving yards. Spikes proved to be the primary target for quarterback Walker Harris, hauling in three of Harris’s four touchdown passes with seemingly effortless precision and turning critical catches into significant gains throughout the game.

Harris orchestrated the Eagles’ high-powered offense with efficiency, completing 18 of 25 passes for 309 yards. His steady hand and ability to repeatedly connect with Spikes showcased an aerial attack in peak form, allowing NCCU to build a commanding lead and control the tempo against their conference rivals.

Howard, who shared the MEAC title with NCCU and Morgan State in 2022, struggled to find a consistent rhythm against the Eagles’ explosive offense and tenacious defense. Quarterback Quinton Williams threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Eden James contributed 71 yards on the ground. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome the Eagles’ offensive onslaught and stifling defense. The loss dropped the Bison’s overall record to 1-3 and their conference mark to 0-1.

This decisive victory underscores North Carolina Central’s intent to defend its conference crown and assert its position as a top-ranked FCS program, having entered the game ranked in the FCS Stats Perform Top 25 poll. The Eagles’ comprehensive team performance in this significant conference matchup highlights their formidable presence in the MEAC.

Looking ahead, North Carolina Central will step out of conference play to host Campbell University on Saturday, September 30, at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, before resuming their MEAC schedule. Howard will also return home for a non-conference tilt against Robert Morris on September 30, as they look to rebound from their conference opener loss.
