Morehead State seals comeback win against Davidson 28-24

Morehead, KY – Morehead State University pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory over Davidson on Saturday, October 28, 2023, securing a 28-24 win at Jayne Stadium. The Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest came down to the final minute, with the Eagles overcoming a significant second-half deficit to clinch the thrilling contest.

With just 1:06 remaining on the clock, senior quarterback Carter Cravens connected with graduate wide receiver Bronson England on a pivotal 4-yard touchdown pass. The score capped an improbable turnaround for Morehead State, who trailed Davidson by as much as 17 points in the third quarter.

Davidson had dominated the first half and extended its lead early in the third, going up 24-7. However, the Eagles’ offense found its rhythm and the defense tightened, shutting out the Wildcats in the final quarter.

The comeback began in earnest with a relentless ground game and timely passing. Morehead State chipped away at Davidson’s lead with a touchdown run by running back Christian Montgomery and another score orchestrated by Cravens, setting the stage for the dramatic final drive.

Cravens, who guided the Eagles’ offense throughout the afternoon, orchestrated the game-winning possession with composure and precision. His connection with England, who was a key target all game, proved to be the decisive play that sealed Morehead State’s fourth victory of the season.

For Davidson, the loss was a tough pill to swallow, as they appeared to be in control for much of the game. Their potent option offense, led by quarterback Brody Bergstrom and running back Aaron S largely, generated significant yards early on, but struggled to find consistency in the crucial late stages against a resurgent Morehead State defense.

The win marked a significant achievement for Morehead State head coach Mike Maher’s squad, showcasing resilience and determination against a strong conference opponent. It improves their overall record to 4-5 and 3-3 in the PFL, keeping their postseason aspirations alive. Davidson falls to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Morehead State will look to carry this momentum into their next PFL matchup, while Davidson will aim to rebound from the heartbreaking defeat.
