Freeze responds to chants, details 3-year Auburn plan

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze directly addressed frustrated chants of “Fire Freeze” from his own fan base Saturday, November 4, 2023, following the Tigers’ 34-24 loss to Kentucky at Kroger Field. The vocal displeasure, which erupted from the Auburn section during the second half, marked a significant moment in Freeze’s inaugural season at the helm of the storied program.

In his post-game press conference, a candid Freeze acknowledged the fan frustration, stating he understood why supporters were upset, especially given the team’s 5-4 overall record and 2-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference. This defeat was the fifth of the season under Freeze, intensifying scrutiny on the program’s trajectory.

“I understand,” Freeze told reporters. “You come to Auburn, and the expectations are to win championships. We’re 5-4, 2-4 in the SEC. I get it. Building a program takes time, but I understand the impatience.”

Freeze, who was hired in December 2022 to rebuild the Tigers’ program after a tumultuous period, laid out his strategic timeline for turning the team into a consistent contender. “My plan is two years to get it in a spot where it’s competitive in the West, and Year 3 to make a run at it,” he explained. He drew parallels to his previous tenure at Ole Miss, where he mentioned a similar two-year build led to a 10-win season in the third year.

Despite his firm belief in his long-term vision, Freeze also made it clear he grasps the immediate pressure inherent in the high-stakes world of SEC football. “I don’t think I’ll be here if I don’t get that job done,” he commented, underscoring the demanding nature of the job.

The loss to Kentucky saw the Wildcats secure 383 total yards, with Auburn struggling to maintain defensive consistency and generate critical offensive plays. The defeat put Auburn’s aspirations for a strong finish to the season in question, particularly with a challenging schedule ahead.

Looking forward, Freeze emphasized focusing on improvement and preparing for the remaining slate of games. Auburn’s schedule included matchups against Arkansas, New Mexico State, and the highly anticipated Iron Bowl showdown against archrival Alabama. The outcome of these games will undoubtedly further define the narrative of Freeze’s first season on the Plains and provide critical context for his two-year rebuilding timeline. The passionate Auburn fan base, known for its high expectations and swift judgments, will be watching closely as Freeze attempts to steer the program back to national prominence.
