ASU QB Sims Earns AP Player of Week, Sets Rush Record

TEMPE, Ariz. – October 14, 20XX – Arizona State quarterback Jeff Sims has been named the Associated Press national college football player of the week, following an electrifying performance Saturday that saw him set an Arizona State quarterback rushing record and lead the Sun Devils to a dominant 45-20 victory over Iowa State.

Sims absolutely torched the Cyclones defense at Mountain America Stadium, racking up an incredible 228 rushing yards on the ground and punching in three rushing touchdowns. His record-setting ground attack eclipsed the previous ASU quarterback rushing mark, demonstrating his explosive playmaking ability. Beyond his historic rushing effort, the dual-threat signal-caller also proved efficient through the air, completing 15 of 27 pass attempts for 168 yards without throwing an interception. All told, Sims accounted for a staggering 396 yards of total offense, cementing his place in the national spotlight.

This monumental achievement marks Sims as the first Arizona State player to earn the prestigious national player of the week honor from the AP since star wide receiver N’Keal Harry achieved the feat back in 2017. Harry’s recognition followed a multi-touchdown receiving performance that showcased his own game-changing talent.

Sims, a key transfer from Nebraska, arrived in Tempe with high expectations, bringing his impressive athleticism and dual-threat capabilities to Sun Devil Football. While at Nebraska, he showcased flashes of brilliance and undeniable talent, and his breakout performance against Iowa State suggests he has found his stride within Head Coach Kenny Dillingham’s offensive scheme.

The decisive 45-20 non-conference victory over the Big 12’s Iowa State improves Arizona State’s season record to 4-2. The win provides significant momentum as the Sun Devils prepare for their upcoming conference schedule. Sims’ ability to control the game on the ground and through the air was pivotal, putting the Sun Devils in a strong position moving forward.

“Jeff’s performance was absolutely special,” said Sun Devils Head Coach Kenny Dillingham following the game. “He put the team on his back, made plays when we needed them most, and really demonstrated the kind of leader he is. This is a well-deserved honor, and we’re incredibly proud of him.”

The Associated Press national college football player of the week award is determined by a panel of 13 sports writers from across the country, recognizing the most outstanding individual performance nationwide each week. Sims’ breakout game not only rewrites the ASU record books but also signals his emergence as one of college football’s most exciting players. His leadership and versatility will be crucial as Arizona State navigates the remainder of its season.
