Aztecs Snap Skid, Beat Wyoming 24-7

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State delivered a much-needed performance Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium, dominating Wyoming 24-7 to snap a three-game losing streak and keep its bowl eligibility hopes alive. True freshman running back Lucky Sutton starred for the Aztecs, rushing for a career-high 158 yards and a touchdown, while a stout defense held the visiting Cowboys in check.

Sutton, making his presence felt early and often, was the engine of the SDSU offense. His highlight came early in the third quarter when he broke free for a decisive 50-yard scoring run, extending the Aztecs’ lead to 17-0. This breakout performance provided a crucial spark for a San Diego State team that had struggled offensively in recent weeks.

Quarterback Jalen Mayden complemented Sutton’s ground attack with a versatile outing. Mayden completed 16 of 25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, demonstrating his effectiveness through the air. He also proved dangerous with his legs, adding 67 rushing yards and securing the 24-7 victory with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities.

The Aztecs’ defense was equally instrumental in the victory, stifling a Wyoming offense that entered the game with a 5-2 record. San Diego State’s unit limited the Cowboys to a mere 239 total yards and a season-low 90 rushing yards, consistently shutting down drives. A pivotal moment came in the second quarter when the defense made a crucial fourth-and-goal stand from the 1-yard line, denying Wyoming any points and preserving a first-half shutout. Wyoming’s only score came in the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Peasley to Wyatt Wieland.

The win improves San Diego State’s overall record to 3-5 and, more importantly, gives them their first Mountain West Conference victory, moving to 1-3 in league play. For a team battling a challenging season, this result provides a significant confidence boost and sets the stage for a critical stretch. The Aztecs now face the daunting task of winning three of their remaining four games to achieve bowl eligibility, a goal that seemed distant just weeks ago.

Conversely, the loss drops Wyoming’s impressive record to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain West, a significant setback in their pursuit of the conference title. Both teams will hit the road next Saturday, November 4th. San Diego State travels to take on Utah State, while Wyoming heads to Fort Collins for a rivalry matchup against Colorado State.
