Peevy’s 3 TDs lead Maine past Stony Brook 28-21

Peevy’s Three Scores Lift Maine Over Stony Brook 28-21 in CAA Thriller

ORONO, Maine – Quarterback Carter Peevy’s three total touchdowns, including the game-winning pass in the fourth quarter, propelled the University of Maine Black Bears to a hard-fought 28-21 victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves this past Saturday, October 28th, at Alfond Stadium. The crucial Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Football matchup marked Maine’s first conference win of the season.

Peevy was the catalyst for the Black Bears offense, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities by throwing for 188 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another 51 yards and a score on the ground. His synergy with wide receiver Montigo Moss was evident, as Moss hauled in eight receptions for 98 yards, including one of Peevy’s touchdown passes, helping Maine build a commanding 21-7 lead by halftime.

However, the visiting Seawolves, despite their winless record, refused to yield. Stony Brook orchestrated a spirited comeback in the third quarter, scoring 14 unanswered points to knot the game at 21-all. Quarterback Casey Case led their resurgence, throwing for 191 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a 29-yard scoring strike to Jayce Freeman. Running backs Johnny Lowery and Anthony Cousins also found the end zone with rushing touchdowns, showcasing Stony Brook’s gritty determination.

With momentum seemingly shifting, the Black Bears dug deep in the final frame. Peevy once again delivered a decisive blow, connecting with Jayson Scheffler for a pivotal 26-yard touchdown pass with just 4:10 remaining on the clock, putting Maine back in front 28-21. Stony Brook mounted a desperate final drive, advancing the ball to Maine’s 34-yard line in the waning minute of play, but the Black Bears defense held firm, forcing a turnover on downs to seal the dramatic home victory.

“This was a huge win for our team, especially in conference play,” said Head Coach Jordan Stevens following the game, acknowledging the team’s resilience. “We knew Stony Brook would fight, and they did. Our guys showed tremendous grit to respond in the fourth quarter. Carter Peevy made some critical plays, and the defense stepped up when it mattered most.”

Peevy echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the team effort. “We practiced all week for a tough battle, and that’s what we got. To come out with a win at home, in front of our fans, after they tied it up, shows a lot about this team’s character.”

The victory improves Maine’s overall season record to 2-6 and marks their first CAA Football win, moving them to 1-4 in conference play. While a playoff berth remains a long shot, the win offers a significant morale boost for the young Black Bears squad. For Stony Brook, the loss drops their season record to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the CAA, continuing a challenging campaign for the Seawolves.

Maine will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for a challenging road trip next Saturday, November 4th, when they face the UAlbany Great Danes at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Stony Brook will return home to LaValle Stadium to host the New Hampshire Wildcats on the same day, still seeking their first victory of the season.
