Drake Downs Butler 24-19, Stays Perfect in PFL

DES MOINES, Iowa – October 28, 2023 – The Drake Bulldogs maintained their perfect Pioneer Football League record and extended their impressive winning streak on Saturday, fending off the Butler Bulldogs with a 24-19 victory at Drake Stadium. The hard-fought win pushes Drake’s overall season record to 8-1 and keeps them unblemished at 7-0 in PFL play, marking their 14th consecutive league triumph as they vie for their first PFL title since 2017.

Drake’s offense showcased a balanced attack, with quarterback Logan Inagawa throwing for 244 yards, including a key touchdown pass to wide receiver Dorian Anderson. Anderson was a standout performer, hauling in six catches for 103 yards. On the ground, Brendan Saravan contributed a touchdown, rushing for 63 yards on 19 carries, while Ian Corwin added another rushing score with a 17-yard burst.

Special teams also played a pivotal role for the Bulldogs. Kicker Tanner Newkirk made program history in the first quarter, nailing a remarkable 55-yard field goal, a new Drake record. He later added a 20-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend Drake’s lead.

Butler, however, refused to back down, putting up a formidable challenge throughout the contest. Quarterback Bret Bushka led the charge for the Indianapolis-based Bulldogs, completing 28 of 45 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns. He also proved a threat with his legs, gaining 57 yards on the ground. Bushka connected with Luke Pape for an early 49-yard touchdown and later found Ryan Lezon for a 3-yard score. Butler’s kicker, Cameron Heirendt, also contributed with a 43-yard field goal.

The game saw Drake open the scoring with Inagawa’s touchdown pass to Anderson. Butler quickly responded, tying the game as Bushka connected with Pape. Drake then reclaimed the lead at 10-7 following Newkirk’s record-setting 55-yard field goal. Butler briefly surged ahead 13-10, but Drake entered halftime with a 17-13 advantage after Corwin’s rushing touchdown. The home team further solidified their lead in the third quarter with Saravan’s touchdown and Newkirk’s second field goal.

Butler mounted a late-game comeback attempt with Lezon’s second touchdown reception, narrowing Drake’s lead to 24-19. However, the Drake defense held strong on Butler’s final possession, securing the narrow victory and preserving their perfect PFL season.

The win puts Drake in a commanding position as they near the end of the regular season, with their eyes firmly set on a PFL championship. Butler now stands at 5-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play following the competitive matchup.
