Orgeron eyes LSU return if Kelly fired, suggests Kiffin

**Orgeron Open to LSU Return if Kelly Departs, Endorses Kiffin as “Great Fit”**

BATON ROUGE – Former LSU head football coach Ed Orgeron has publicly stated he would “absolutely” consider a second stint leading the Tigers, but only under one significant condition: if current head coach Brian Kelly were to be fired. Orgeron, who famously guided LSU to an undefeated national championship in 2019, also weighed in on other potential candidates, notably endorsing Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.

Orgeron’s comments, made during a recent interview, underscore his continued affection for the LSU program, which he led from 2016 until his departure in October 2021. “I would absolutely consider it,” Orgeron stated regarding a potential return to Baton Rouge, adding the crucial caveat, “if Brian Kelly ever gets fired.”

Kelly, who just completed his second season at the helm, guided LSU to a 9-3 record in 2023, following a 10-4 campaign in his debut year. His overall record with the Tigers stands at 19-7. Despite a strong overall performance, the high expectations surrounding the LSU program often lead to intense scrutiny, even after winning seasons. Kelly is currently under a substantial long-term contract with the university.

Orgeron, who coached his final game for LSU on November 27, 2021, reflected on his initial departure, acknowledging a degree of hindsight. “I probably should have left after the championship season,” he admitted, referring to the historic 2019 run where LSU went 15-0 and captured the College Football Playoff National Championship. That season, led by Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, is widely considered one of the most dominant in college football history. Orgeron’s overall record at LSU was 49-17, including the championship season.

Beyond his own potential interest, Orgeron also offered his take on who would make a strong candidate should the head coaching position open. He specifically highlighted Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin. “Lane Kiffin would be a great fit for LSU,” Orgeron said, citing Kiffin’s well-known offensive prowess and experience in the demanding SEC. Kiffin has built a high-powered offense at Ole Miss and has a history of success as both a head coach and offensive coordinator at various high-profile programs.

Orgeron’s remarks suggest he still believes he could rekindle the “2019 magic” in Death Valley. While Brian Kelly appears firmly entrenched in his role, Orgeron’s comments serve as a reminder of the ever-present speculation and high-stakes nature of coaching in the fiercely competitive Southeastern Conference.
